ALLEN PARK, Mich. -- The Detroit Lions didnt even play last weekend and still made progress. A loss by Minnesota left the Lions tied with the Vikings for first place in the NFC North. That hardly registered with coach Jim Caldwell. It doesnt affect us, positive or negative, Caldwell said Monday after his team came off its bye week. Were focusing on the next game. That next game is Sunday at home against Jacksonville. The struggling Jaguars (2-7) have lost four in a row, but Caldwell insisted they present plenty to worry about.Theyve got a fair amount of high draft picks on this team who are very capable players, Caldwell said. Theyve done a lot of good things.Theyre getting 4.2 (yards rushing) per carry, which is where wed like to be, he added. (Allen) Robinson catches the ball well. He has 48 catches and they have four more guys with at least 25 catches. They have two backs as good as any you can see and they have defensive guys who can run and hit. Thats going to be a problem. So weve got to be ready.Monday marked the first time the Lions had met the media since Donald Trump was elected president. When asked about it, Caldwell initially tried to deflect the question.I try to use this platform for what its meant for, and thats to talk about my team, he said. Leadership is important. I do know that. Had I voiced the same opinions as some of our candidates, I wouldnt have this job five minutes after I walked off this stage. Some of you as well. But yet the person has become the leader of the free world. So again, a different time and place, and Im moving forward.Offensive lineman Larry Warford said that, while Lions players did discuss the election, they kept it light.Guys have been giving it jokingly, he said, like anyone would about (Trump) winning, and a lot of conversations have come up and good talk, but its not like its unruly in here. Life goes on.Its that focus, special teams player Brandon Copeland said, that has helped lift the team to first place after a 1/3 start. Its nice to come off your bye week in contention, he said. But we also know that if we dont continue to do what weve done and win games, it doesnt mean anything. Not to go back to last year, but being 1-7, the only way we get to 7-9 was by focusing on one game at a time. Its nothing new or different to us. Its how weve been trained and how well continue to attack it.Game notes Caldwell said he did get away to spend time with his three grandchildren during the bye. My time with them is important, and I dont get enough of it, he said. Theyre growing up quickly. He also watched college football. I watched as much as I could, he said. Banks told TSN on Jan 2 that he had no interest in playing out the option year of his contract with the Lions in 2014, and he again made that clear in a conversation with Lions GM Wally Buono last week. RALEIGH, N.C. -- Three snaps for Jalan McClendon. Three touchdowns.Just that quickly, North Carolina States already potent offense might have discovered another weapon -- and given other teams something more to worry about. The Wolfpacks backup quarterback rushed for two TDs and threw for a third in a 49-22 rout of Old Dominion on Saturday night. If the plan is to use McClendon as a short-yardage change of pace near the goal line against a tough gauntlet -- one that includes No. 18 Notre Dame, No. 5 Clemson and No. 10 Louisville in consecutive weeks in October -- he wouldnt say so.Thats probably the coachs call right now, McClendon said. Other teams, theyll probably be game-planning (for) that, and well have to call something different. Im not sure what else well see in the future.Starter Ryan Finley was 24 of 28 for 281 yards with three touchdown passes -- two to Jaylen Samuels -- prompting Old Dominion coach Bobby Wilder to call him a star and helping the Wolfpack (2-1) bounce back from a dispiriting loss at East Carolina. It was a tough week, and our guys hung together, coach Dave Doeren said. It wasnt perfect, but it was a lot better. ... We hung together, and were going to stay together.Finley, a graduate transfer from Boise State, beat out McClendon during preseason camp, and in his first two starts, N.C. State averaged 511 total yards and 39 points. The Wolfpack gained 470 yards in this one, with Doeren bringing in McClendon for three goal-line situations. Each of McClendons three snaps in those spots went for TDs: He scored on runs of 1 and 3 yards to help N.C. State take a 14-3 lead, then hit Thaddeus Moss -- the son of former NFL receiver Randy Moss -- with a 3-yard scoring pass.Jalans a great teammate, and he understood why Ryan was in front of him, Doeren said. He was going to have opportunities, and he seized them today, and Im proud of him for that. ... Hes got a great future, he does.David Washington threw two touchdown passes to Zach Pascal and Jeremy Cox had a 65-yard touchdown run for Old Dominion (1-2), which has lost two straight. The Monarchs had just 63 total yards in the first half..dddddddddddde needed to play better offensively in the first half than we did, Wilder said.THE TAKEAWAYOld Dominion: Since the program launched in 2009, the Monarchs have yet to beat a power-conference team. This was their third loss to N.C. State in three seasons, their sixth loss to an Atlantic Coast Conference school since 2013, and theyve yet to hold the Wolfpack to fewer than 38 points. Their next crack at the ACC comes next September when North Carolina visits. One problem: They didnt get much from RB Ray Lawry, who carried nine times for just 14 yards -- well shy of what would have been his third straight 100-yard effort.N.C. State: For much of the night, this didnt look a whole lot like the same N.C. State defense that gave up 445 total yards and 33 points to East Carolina. The final numbers might not look that way, but this effort was better. The Wolfpack allowed 321 total yards, but much of that came in three chunks: A 91-yard touchdown drive in the third quarter prolonged by a fake punt in ODU territory, and two other scoring drives in the fourth quarter after the Wolfpack already had the victory well in hand.NUMBER TO KNOW455.2 -- McClendons passing rating immediately after his short touchdown pass to Moss came on his first attempt. He ended the game with a rating of 222.6 after completing 3 of 4 passes for 31 yards.UP NEXTOld Dominion: The Monarchs begin Conference USA play next week with a visit from a Texas-San Antonio team that probably should have held on to beat Arizona State on Friday night.N.C. State: The Wolfpack have a week off before instate rival Wake Forest visits Oct. 1 to wrap up their manageable early season schedule.THE LAST WORDWe had a mission to get a win -- N.C.
